We are delighted to welcome Steven McBurnie to the firm as part of the Financial Planning team. At AAB Wealth we value every team member and encourage personal development as it benefits the whole team and the clients we look after. Steven has shared some insights into his career journey so far, his experience of joining the firm during the pandemic and how he’s found working at AAB Wealth since joining in June.

I grew up in Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire, the original home of Johnnie Walker whisky, before studying Financial Services at Glasgow Caledonian University. I always knew that financial planning was the career path for me. I have now been paraplanning for almost 10 years across a variety of different firms and investment propositions, more recently working with Discretionary Fund Management for high net worth (HNW) clients. Being able to build long-lasting relationships and help clients meet their life goals made me realise this was the career path for me.

I must confess that I had not heard of AAB Wealth before speaking to a specialist financial services recruitment consultant, but a combination of their recent press sharing the firm’s milestone of reaching their 10th anniversary that highlighted their continued growth stood out to me. Despite having to join AAB Wealth from home, I was fortunate enough to travel to our head office in Aberdeen for my first three days to meet some of the team. I was impressed by the flexibility that the firm offers to balance work and personal life through their hybrid working scheme.

Currently I’m using the time I save from not commuting to the office towards exam revision and exercising by running to keep fit and gain points for my team in our CommonHealth Games. I’m also looking forward to the Dramathon in October which is a 10K run along the Speyside Way from Aberlour to the Glenfiddich Distillery.

Five words I would use to describe working at AAB Wealth are supportive, rewarding, flexible, collaborative and fun. My role as Financial Planning Associate involves a lot of problem solving and teamwork. I review client’s current financial position an assist the planner with creating a solution that will meet their needs and objectives. I also liaise with the team to ensure clients are looked after and make the process as easy as possible for them.

As we come out of lockdown, I hope my role will evolve and that I will be involved in more face-to-face meetings to get to know our clients more and aid AAB Wealth’s main purpose of looking after our clients so that they can face their financial future with confidence. Once I’m more familiar with our processes, I would also like to help support the junior members of our team expand their knowledge and understanding. Having experienced this support throughout my own career journey, I would be proud to play my part in developing the next generation in our industry and see them transition into the next stage of their careers.
